Boundary Bell 2024
The Bell will return to the South Side of Glasgow after Haggs Castle's victory in the match played at The Bishopbriggs Golf Club on Sunday 1st September. This year's match was played between Glasgow GC the holders and three in a row winners, and Haggs Castle GC who have won the Bell on 5 previous occasions. The match got underway at 12.15 with Clark Nelson teeing off for Glasgow and Louis Fleming for Haggs Castle. The match format features 8 @ 2 ball games and 1 reserve game.
Haggs went into an early lead after Louis's 4&3 victory in game 1, but Neil MacRae pulled it back to all square with his 1up win in game 2. Glasgow then moved into the lead with Jonathan King's 4&3 win in game 3, with David Gravil and Steven Rettie having a half match in game 4. Game 5 saw Ross McLeod of Haggs win 3&2, and Stevie Doyle had the best result of the day in game 6 with his 5&4 win to put Haggs in the driving seat. Team Manager Craig Morrison playing in game 7 had a 3&1 win over Gray Murphy, and in game 8 John Mathers's fine birdie at 18 to half his match, resulted in the final score of 5-3 in favour of Haggs Castle.
Haggs Castle last won the Bell in 2019, and after a great season in the Brand Putter League where they won the title with a 5 point margin, this win is extra special. Team Manager Craig Morrison, who was also joint Player of the Year in the BPL, was delighted for both his team and the club, and this victory means they now share with Cawder GC a total of 6 wins each in this competition.
As for Glasgow, they can be very proud of their record 3 wins in a row in seasons 2021-2023, they are the only club, apart from Cawder, to hold this achievement in the competition.
Thanks to the Bishopbriggs Golf Club for hosting the event, and considering the tough weather conditions we've had over the last few week, the course was in great condition, especially the greens.
Also a big thanks to Willie Abernethy of the DCL for organising the event.
Wee Boundary Bell
The Wee Boundary Bell was played on Sunday 15th September also at The Bishopbriggs Golf Club. The match was played between Glasgow Golf Club, winners of this year's JJ McCarry League, and Fereneze Golf Club who were winners of this year's Fleming Watson League. The clubs have already met 3 times since this competition started, with Fereneze having 2 wins, and Glasgow (current holders) 1 win.
The event got underway at 1.00pm, with Cameron Burns for Glasgow and Arron McGuire for Fereneze teeing off. This ended in a win for Cameron, and Glasgow went 2 games up with Charlie Bell's high scoring win against Evan McGill. Gregor Campbell pulled one back for Fereneze in game 3, with game 4 then ending all square. Game 5 went to Fereneze at the 17th hole, making the overall match score all square. Glasgow coasted to victory in the first sudden death hole to hold on to the Wee Bell making it 2 wins overall in the competition.
So congratulations to the Glasgow team, and commiserations to Fereneze, on great afternoon of junior golf.
Many thanks once again to The Bishopbriggs Golf Club for courtesy of the course on a particularly busy afternoon at the club, and to Willie and team for organising the event.
Inter Cities Cup 2024
The venue for this year's Inter Cities Cup was Duddingston Golf Club in Edinburgh, with the event being held on Sunday 13th October. This year's final was played between Longniddry winners of the Edinburgh Golf League, and Haggs Castle winners of the Boundary Bell. The format is 9 x 2 ball games with 1 point per win.
The golf course was in great condition and well presented.
The match got off to a fast start in favour of Longniddry with both James Morgan and Craig Davidson securing points. David Gravill for Haggs won 1up to secure a point for his team, then Killian Martens added another with a long range birdie on the 18th to make the match all square after 4 games. James Gribben for Longniddry then had a good 3&2 victory in his game, followed by John Mathers for Haggs who won 2&1 to again square the match with 6 games played.
Haggs Team Manager Craig Morrison put Haggs back in the driving seat with a 2&1 win in game 7, but Louis Cheetham for Longniddry made it 4-4 with his win in game 8. With the match now resting on the reserve game, it was Don Reid who secured the cup for Longniddry winning the final game.
A fantastic match, and congratulations to Longniddry who win their first Inter Cities title. Commiserations to Haggs Castle on a great match, and they will surely be back.
The Inter Cities Cup committee would like to thank Duddingston Golf Club for hosting the event, and their excellent hospitality. Also thanks to the players and supporters who helped to make this another memorable ICC.
