The Inter Cities Cup            

Graham Ewart, Past President of the SGU and Life Member of Kingsknowe Golf Club, had the forethought and vision of playing an inter league competition on a regional basis. On the 14th September 2005, he approached John Archibald and Brain Davidson and suggested that the winners of the Edinburgh Golf League should play the winners of the Glasgow Boundary Bell (BPL v DCL)

Telephone calls, e-mails and meetings ensued between Graham and the representatives from the Edinburgh Golf League, the Donald Cameron League and the Brand Putter League from Glasgow. The Rules of the Competition were finally agreed and the first leg of the Inaugural Competition was played at Cawder Golf Club on the 2nd April 2006 and the return leg was played at Kingsknowe Golf Club on the 9th April 2006.

History will no doubt tell you that the result however from that Wednesday afternoon in September the now annual INTER CITIES CUP was born.

On the 1st April 2012 a decision was taken by the Committee members that the Inter Cities Cup competition should be played over the first and second Sundays in October instead of the first and second Sundays in April of the following year. The first and second legs of the competition for the 2012 playing season will be played on Sunday 7th October and Sunday 14th October respectively.

This decision meant that the team members that had played on a regular basis throughout the year were now hopefully available to represent their Clubs in the Final in the same playing season.A further two weeks of team golf at the end of an already busy playing season however proved to be slightly more controversial.

It was decided therefore by the Committee members after the second leg of the Final on the 14th October 2012 that it would be a more fitting climax to the playing season if the Final itself was played as a one off match. This would be at a neutral venue in either Glasgow or Edinburgh on the first Sunday in October.

It was agreed that Glasgow will Host the Final in years ending in ODD numbers and Edinburgh will host the Final in years ending in EVEN numbers. It was also decided that in the event of the Final not being played due to inclement weather on the first Sunday in October, the match will be rescheduled for the second Sunday in October and if this date is also unsuitable then the match will be rescheduled for the last Sunday in April of the following year.
